Do Starbucks baristas know if you don't tip?
The general consensus seemed to be that while baristas almost always make a mental note of whether customers tipped or not, they are only really bothered by a lack of tip when the order is complicated, and they had to go above and beyond.
Everything is split evenly based on hours worked. Nobody knows who tipped what, outside of whoever is in front of you when you staffed a couple single in the jar.
Many etiquette experts insist that tipping baristas, who in many states make at least minimum wage, unlike, say, bartenders, who are paid a "server's wage" on the understanding that they will make up for it in tips, is not required.
Counter service
For that reason, tipping people who work behind a counter, such as a barista or a cashier, is not a requirement as far as etiquette experts are concerned — even if the tablet suggests otherwise.
Starbucks has a nationwide minimum wage of $15 per hour so it's not like I'm a waitress who gets $2/hour and has to make up the rest in tips. That's why it feels so strange to prompt customers for a tip — we're just a coffee shop.
The Starbucks Workers Union (SBWU) told Fortune that the credit card tipping program directly resulted from their campaign. “Credit card tipping was one of the first demands that unionizing workers made in Buffalo, NY last fall when we launched our campaign,” a spokesperson from SBWU said.
The general consensus seemed to be that while baristas almost always make a mental note of whether customers tipped or not, they are only really bothered by a lack of tip when the order is complicated, and they had to go above and beyond.
Reports suggest one reason for the change is that Starbucks is undergoing something of a unionization drive and credit card tipping is one of the things unions demand.
Starbucks customers have long been able to tip in cash or on the app. But more recently, a tip prompt on credit card payments has been added as well. Customers have to respond to the prompt — if only to select “no tip” — in order to complete the transaction.
The Post Institute says no tip is required if you walk into the establishment to grab your order, but that you should tip 10% if your food is brought out to you. However, Jodi RR Smith, president of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting, believes that in a post-pandemic world, you should always tip for takeout.
Do people tip at Starbucks drive through?
It is not necessary to tip when using a drive-thru, but it is always appreciated by the baristas if you choose to do so. Nothing… They didn't come out to my car and take my order. They took my order over a tinny-sounding speaker while I waited in line.
20% is the REAL standard for tips
Industry insider: common consensus says 15-20% is considered a normal tip, but honestly any amount less than 20% is considered a bad tip. If I (or the other servers I worked with) got less, we wondered what we did wrong.

- 'Don't ask for a "normal coffee". ...
- 'One guy asked me for a flat American and then got angry when it didn't exist. ...
- 'Anyone asking for "extra hot" makes what I do as a barista pointless because I'm burning everything in that cup. ...
- 'An Americano is a black coffee.
Starbucks has a policy that baristas are not allowed to directly accept tips because it is part of their pay structure. Baristas don't wait on you or bus your table, making them comparable to fast-food restaurants. With that in mind, why should they be tipped?
'Guilt tipping,' explained
Nearly a quarter of people say they always feel pressured to tip when the option is presented, according to LendingTree's survey. And 42% say they sometimes feel pressured. If this sounds like you, you may be guilt tipping.
Tips vary day to day and by season. Typically they range between $1.20 and $1.80 an hour, but this varies by store and even the staff that is working.
Tipping can add to a barista salary:
Patrons tip normal to above average (50%-90%) of the time. The average tip is $1.00* Some patrons will only tip leftover change, while other customers will tip the leftover change plus a $1 or $2.
In-store beverage and food benefit: Store partners working in company-owned Starbucks stores may consume any handcrafted beverage free of charge while working, as well as seven free food items from the pastry or ready-to-eat case per week.
The company has argued that this tipping option — capable of adding an extra $200 to $400 per paycheck for baristas, workers previously told Orlando Weekly — was a benefit that, for unionized locations, needed to be negotiated through the collective bargaining process.
Instead, they pay the workers very little, and expect them to make up for it through tips. The price of drinks or food should reflect the salary paid to servers, and then people can decide if they want to order that item or not.
Do I need to tip at Starbucks Reddit?
A tip is always appreciated, but never required and I hate that some customers fill forced to tip. Starbucks is so expensive and stupid for no reason (as a barista at Starbucks).
When you tip via the Starbucks app, do the employees actually receive all of the tip? We do! Every day we have a digital tip that is taken out of the registers and placed directly into the tip jar.
You don't always have to tip
The same goes for coffee shops or other quick-service places where you might be faced with the dreaded tablet screen. This is where common sense comes in handy, Gottsman says. But humanity is important too, she adds — if you're feeling generous, go ahead and leave a tip.
Fast food workers are not “service workers” in any classical sense. They provide little or no personal and unique service to the customers. Tipping is reserved for the people who tailor their services to the needs of the customer.
Starbucks Vs.
Around 15 to 20 percent is still customary, as the employees are often making around the same hourly amount as other coffee shops. If you're interested more in supporting local businesses, choose your caffeine hub accordingly, and feel free to tip extra if desired.
Generally speaking, delivery orders that are less than $20 are given a minimum tip of $3. If the order is over $20, then it's customary to calculate a tip that is 10%-15% of the order (but never less than $5).
Yes, you should tip the waitstaff for your takeout order—if the restaurant is a traditional dine-in establishment where servers wait on tables. “An appropriate amount to tip on takeout orders would be approximately 10% to 12%,” says Kane.
"Tipping on takeout orders is the right thing to do," says H.G. Parsa, professor of lodging management at the University of Denver. "Even takeout involves some amount of service, and we should tip those employees." A tip is a token of appreciation for the service provided, and takeout is a service, Parsa says.
"It depends on how big your order is — good tips are at least 15%," said a DoorDasher who declined to share his name. That means the woman who tipped $5 on her $20 DoorDash order — which is a 25% gratuity — actually gave quite a good tip, drivers said. "A $5 tip on a $20 order? That's not bad at all.
Legally it's voluntary but if you slink out of a restaurant without leaving a gratuity of between 20 and 25 per cent, you're likely to be chased by a waiter demanding to know why. To help you avoid tipping anxiety (and disgruntled waitstaff), we explain how to tip in the United States.
Is $1 a good tip?
If you have excellent or extremely fast service and want to leave something, consider adding a few dollars to the tip jar. “Some suggest that 10% is a good amount, but others say $1 or $2 is reasonable for good service,” she adds.
- "I'll have a medium." Even the man on the moon knows what we call drinks at Starbucks, so there's no need to pretend. ...
- "Can I get your number?" Nope. ...
- "I bet you're sick of coffee." No, but I am sick of you (and every other person in the tri-state area) saying that.
For new baristas, they often find the Flat White to be the hardest to make, as poor milk steaming or a bad pour or bad timing on the last little bit can ruin the ability to make a good looking one.
Work as a barista is fast-paced, especially during those times of day when everyone seems to stop in to get their coffee before work or during their afternoon lull. As a barista, you'll be expected to provide excellent customer service, even under pressure and while working in an often high-stress environment.
Though 15% is within the recommended tipping range for service, it's the absolute least you should tip. There has long been an idea that the amount of the tip should correlate to the service, so good service earns a tip, and bad service doesn't get one. The tip isn't always just “extra cash” for the server, though.
Of all the world's most popular tourist destinations, Japan is most notoriously the one where you should make a point not to tip. Why? Well, the gesture could be considered rude. The Japanese philosophy is that the staff works for an establishment as a team, and if they do a good job, customers will return.
Some people tip to help the server, to supplement their income and make them happy. Some people tip to get future service. And then other people tip to avoid disapproval: You don't want the server to think badly of you. And some people tip out of a sense of duty.
Will you let me know if you are not moving forward with my application? Yes, if we decide not to move forward based on the initial resume review, we will let you know via email. If you have talked directly with a recruiter or store manager, that individual will let you know about the status of your application.
The Starbucks app will actually let you tip, although most of the time people who use the app don't do it anyways. After you make a purchase, whether mobile order or in store, a bubble should pop up asking if you would like to leave a digital tip (which we cash out at the end of the day).

If you left and went back before the 6 month mark you are almost guaranteed a job to be waiting for you. Even after it is extremely likely you will be rehired. You will need to re apply and wait for a response. Reach out too former contacts you made while you were employed there.
What are the odds of getting hired at Starbucks?
Given its reputation for looking after its staff, Starbucks receives a large volume of applications. Every year, Starbucks receives over a million job applications and hires just 10% of these. That makes the odds of being selected competitive, but far from impossible.

Many commenters report tipping their barista because they recognise that service industry wages are low. It's difficult to find reliable data on global coffee shop salaries, but in many countries, it's rare for baristas to make a living wage, particularly if they are in a major city.
First, almost no one tips at drive throughs anywhere. You don't need to. Second, its a coffee shop. You don't have to tip baristas.
Tips are shared evenly, weekly, between hourly employees. I would estimate average tips to be $1.50/hour. So you're looking at earning about $12 in tips for each 8 hours worked.
Digital Tipping (NEW!) - Customers can show their appreciation to store partners by tipping through the Starbucks App for iPhone. Customers are given the option to provide a tip in the following denominations: $0.50, $1.00, $2.00.
