Is it ever OK not to tip?
You're not satisfied with the service.
You're never obligated to tip someone when they've provided you poor service or if you've had a rude interaction with them. In the case of a one-on-one service, such as a haircut, this is pretty cut and dried.
Legally it's voluntary but if you slink out of a restaurant without leaving a gratuity of between 20 and 25 per cent, you're likely to be chased by a waiter demanding to know why. To help you avoid tipping anxiety (and disgruntled waitstaff), we explain how to tip in the United States.
"It depends on how big your order is — good tips are at least 15%," said a DoorDasher who declined to share his name. That means the woman who tipped $5 on her $20 DoorDash order — which is a 25% gratuity — actually gave quite a good tip, drivers said. "A $5 tip on a $20 order? That's not bad at all.
Leave a tip based on how much! Tips are not a law however, and if you received poor service, long wait time and/or rude behavior, the tip can be limited or non existent. Its up to you and based on your gratuity.
Should you feel guilty about not tipping? Etiquette expert weighs in. Lizzie Post, co-host of "Awesome Etiquette" podcast and great-great-granddaughter of etiquette icon Emily Post, tells "Nightcap's" Jon Sarlin that consumers should have confidence when they're leaving a tip, not fear or guilt.
I think it's particularly shocking that only 65 percent of diners at sit-down restaurants always tip the waitstaff. That leaves 18 percent who tip most of the time, 12 percent who sometimes tip and 5 percent who never tip. Four years ago, 77 percent of diners always tipped their waiter or waitress.
Industry insider: common consensus says 15-20% is considered a normal tip, but honestly any amount less than 20% is considered a bad tip.
In the US, historians say tipping was almost nonexistent prior to about 1840. But in the years leading up to the Civil War, many wealthy Americans discovered the practice on their travels to Europe. When they returned, some began tipping as a way to signal their status and show off their worldliness.
The appropriate amount to tip servers depends on your service. 15% is appropriate for average service ; 20% if your server is above average. You should feel free to tip above 20% if you received excellent service. If you received poor service, it is better to talk to the manager than skip on the tip.
Is a $1 tip OK?
At most restaurants, tipping on a percentage of the total bill remains de rigueur. But at bars, a $1-per-drink gratuity has remained the standard, even amid ballooning inflation and the ever-rising cost of living.
Generally speaking, delivery orders that are less than $20 are given a minimum tip of $3. If the order is over $20, then it's customary to calculate a tip that is 10%-15% of the order (but never less than $5).

Most tipping etiquette says to tip $1 per item at the coat check and $2 to $5 for valet parking; for porters and bellhops, $1 to $3 per bag is fine.
“You have to know the norm.” It's true that some bad tippers, according to Lynn, can't afford it. “They may not have the money, or they have so little money that the alternative uses of it are more important to them than the social approval that comes from tipping,” he says.
Automatic gratuity policies have long been used by restaurants, hotels, bars, and even cruise ships to ensure that their employees are properly paid for certain types of service. However, as laws evolve and the debate about the minimum wage continues, many establishments are re-thinking these policies.
Tip 15%-20% across the board
According to Best Life, 18% is the tipping standard for fancy restaurants; anything less than 15% is unacceptable. A 20% tip, it says, is a good way to acknowledge exceptional service.
Here's when to leave 20%, and when it's OK to leave less. Two-thirds of Americans have a negative view about tipping, according to a recent Bankrate report, particularly when it comes to contactless and digital payment prompts with options that can range from 15% to 35% for each transaction.
Some people tip to help the server, to supplement their income and make them happy. Some people tip to get future service. And then other people tip to avoid disapproval: You don't want the server to think badly of you. And some people tip out of a sense of duty.
Remember the golden rule: "You should tip 20% on the entire service cost, not per individual," says Schweitzer.
People are tipping less in part because of inflation, experts say. They are also overwhelmed with the number of places that give them the option to tip with a card on an iPad, leading people to be less generous.
How many Americans don't tip?
Restaurant servers are the people Americans say they tip the most often, but only 65% of survey respondents said they always tipped for table service, with a shocking 5% saying they never tip at all.
More Americans might be skimping on tips at restaurants and hair salons amid persistent inflation. But there's one important place they're often forgetting to pay gratuity altogether amid the "tipflation" debate, according to one etiquette expert: hotels.
ALSO SEE: Tipping Etiquette Around The World. "It's not pressure on me to give them a good tip," said Lance Bush or Deerpark. "The question is whether they performed their job." Such "public displays of gratuity" can sometimes lead to "tip shaming," making some customers feel less than generous.
Even if the service is poor, it's recommended you leave at least 10 percent. * Check your tab carefully because some places add a gratuity to the bill. You may or may not want to supplement that. For the wait staff at sit-down restaurants, the tip should be 15 percent to 20 percent of the pretax bill.
Just as in Japan, it is not customary to tip in China. Tipping in China is generally uncommon and can even be considered rude or embarrassing in some circumstances so when taking a taxi, enjoying a refreshing drink or tucking into a delicious meal there's no requirement to leave any gratuities.
Tipping is not mandatory in the United States, so there are no laws that govern how much gratuity should be paid. That means it is generally up to you to decide how much of a tip to leave a server at a restaurant.
Tipping may date back to the Roman era, but most sources trace it back to medieval Europe, when wealthy visitors to homes would leave tips for servants who provided good service.
According to Michael Lynn, a professor at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, tipping in the United States began just after the American Civil War in the late 1800's.
Michael Lynn, a consumer behavior professor at Cornell University, said consumers were more generous with tips during the early days of the pandemic in an effort to show support for restaurants and other businesses that were hard hit by COVID-19.
If you're ever in doubt on whether or not you should or shouldn't tip, “It is always better to offer a tip than not to tip,” she said. It's awkward to offer a cash tip for professionals like a doctor, lawyer or accountant. A gift is more appropriate if you want to thank that person, said Smith.
How much should you tip on a $200 bill?
If your total bill is $200 and you want to tip 15%, work out the tip by multiplying the total bill by 0.15. You can then add this amount to your bill when it comes to pay. Simple. Or alternatively, you can multiply the bill excluding service by 1.15 (assuming you want to leave that same 15% tip).
In a survey done by US Foods, delivery drivers and customers agree that $4 is a reasonable tip for those delivering food.
Leave a tip for every drink.
A good rule to follow is about $1 a drink. In nicer bars, leave $2 per drink. If you're paying with a card, calculate 20% of your tab at the end of the night. For more expensive cocktails, it's a better idea to go with 20% of the tab rather than tipping by the drink.
So for a $100 tab (post-tax), your tip should be no less than $15, $20 if the bar had to make your drinks. You can tip more if desired, but the only reason to tip less would be if the experience was abysmal and nothing realistically was done in the attempt to better the experience.
The Web site www.tipthepizzaguy.com suggests the following: 15% for normal service, with a $2 minimum; 20% for excellent service; 10% or less for poor service; at least 10% for orders of $50 or more.
A $2 tip if you are ordering something small and it's not far is not a bad tip, if you order something for $10 that's still 20%.
The Average Tip for a Private Car Driver
The standard tip for a private driver is typically 15-20% of the total hourly cost of the ride, which is consistent with the general tipping practices and rule of thumb in the service industry.
The Bottom Line
Tips in these instances aren't necessarily expected, but they are appreciated and, in some cases, can help workers make ends meet. So when you have the extra cash, consider tipping—it could help out a food-service worker more than you'd assume.
Leaving 1 penny face down or 2 pennies only used to mean that you were unhappy with the service. (Adding a face up penny to a generous tip meant excellent services) It may be an outdated custom now since leaving a tip is pretty much mandatory. Thanks to the $2.13 minimum wage for wait staff.
Japan. Unlike Spain, Japan is a country where you should not tip at all; it's actually offensive. In the majority of Japanese restaurants a bill is not brought to the table. Instead, payment is accepted at the bar, so even trying to leave a tip for the waiter can be tricky.
Where is it rude to not tip?
Just as in Japan, it is not customary to tip in China. Tipping in China is generally uncommon and can even be considered rude or embarrassing in some circumstances so when taking a taxi, enjoying a refreshing drink or tucking into a delicious meal there's no requirement to leave any gratuities.
No, if the gratuity is included in the bill, there is no need to tip unless you want to. No one will think bad of you if you don't leave a tip. Usually a gratuity is included when it is a large party being served.
Tips have played a key role in restaurants, where workers typically earn less than the minimum wage and rely on service charges to boost their income. Now that customers are constantly prompted to leave tips for a range of services, some businesses even mention tips in their job listings to try and entice applicants.
