In 20 years, the Black population has more than doubled in size in this province – going from 131,970 people in 1996 to 319,230 people in 2016. It took the passage of the Slavery Abolition Act by the British parliament to finally prohibit the enslavement of African people across most of the Empire, effective 1 August 1834.
About 2.4-3% of Mexico's population has significantly large African ancestry, with 2.5 million self-recognized during the 2020 Inter-census Estimate. However, some sources put the official number at around 5% of the total population.
Merchants owned the largest number, but farmers, the political elite, and the Church were also slave owners. Enslaved people acted as servants, as farm labour and as skilled artisans. Their forced labour contributed to the success and prosperity of the British colonies that became modern Canada.
In all 30,000 slaves fled to Canada, many with the help of the underground railroad - a secret network of free blacks and white sympathizers who helped runaways. Canada was viewed as a safe haven, where a black person could be free.
Some lived in all-Black settlements such as the Elgin Settlement and Buxton Mission, the Queen's Bush Settlement, and the Dawn Settlement near Dresden, Ontario, as well as Birchtown and Africville in Nova Scotia.

What percent of British Columbia is Black?
According to the 2021 census, there are 61,760 black people in B.C., comprising a little more than 1.2 per cent of the population.
