Why did Starbucks start tipping?
Reports suggest one reason for the change is that Starbucks is undergoing something of a unionization drive and credit card tipping is one of the things unions demand.
Starbucks baristas ARE allowed to accept tips. That's why there's a tip jar on the front counter. Tips must go into the jar because all tips are shared among all hourly employees who worked that week. Tips provide a significant portion of the baristas' (and shift supervisors') weekly income.
Many etiquette experts insist that tipping baristas, who in many states make at least minimum wage, unlike, say, bartenders, who are paid a "server's wage" on the understanding that they will make up for it in tips, is not required.
“We can also confirm that Starbucks is rolling out the ability for customers to tip for credit card transactions at the register in the café and drive-thru,” a spokesperson told The Post. “This capability began at select stores in the US in September 2022 and will continue to roll out through the end of the year.”
Tips are split up among baristas and shift supervisors, but not given to managers, shift managers, or assistant managers. The tips will vary and they are distributed every Tuesday amongst all of the baristas. The way that the tips are distributed are by how many hours you worked the previous week.
Starbucks has a nationwide minimum wage of $15 per hour so it's not like I'm a waitress who gets $2/hour and has to make up the rest in tips. That's why it feels so strange to prompt customers for a tip — we're just a coffee shop.
Starbucks customers have long been able to tip in cash or on the app. But more recently, a tip prompt on credit card payments has been added as well. Customers have to respond to the prompt — if only to select “no tip” — in order to complete the transaction.
Many commenters report tipping their barista because they recognise that service industry wages are low. It's difficult to find reliable data on global coffee shop salaries, but in many countries, it's rare for baristas to make a living wage, particularly if they are in a major city.
No. The tips are pooled from the mobile app daily and actually paid out weekly as a percentage of total hours worked. I can assure you that your baristas do love your tips and would encourage you to tip them anyway, even though they won't know it's you… OR you could always drop a $5 in the jar once a week.
Counter service
For that reason, tipping people who work behind a counter, such as a barista or a cashier, is not a requirement as far as etiquette experts are concerned — even if the tablet suggests otherwise.
Do baristas care if you tip?
The general consensus seemed to be that while baristas almost always make a mental note of whether customers tipped or not, they are only really bothered by a lack of tip when the order is complicated, and they had to go above and beyond.
Should You Tip Your Barista? The short answer is yes. Whenever you are purchasing a coffee drink that a barista is preparing for you, it's customary to tip just as you traditionally would in other food-and-beverage establishments, no matter if you're being served at a table or waiting in line for to-go.

In-store beverage and food benefit: Store partners working in company-owned Starbucks stores may consume any handcrafted beverage free of charge while working, as well as seven free food items from the pastry or ready-to-eat case per week.
As a general rule, the amount of tips is not specifically reported to Starbucks by the employees. That kind of pooled tipping practice is common at restaurants and bars. By law, all tips you receive – even those in a tip-sharing arrangement – are reportable as income and are subject to federal income tax.
It is not necessary to tip when using a drive-thru, but it is always appreciated by the baristas if you choose to do so.
Earlier this fall, the coffee giant introduced an option to add gratuity when paying by card. Card readers now bear digital buttons to tip $1, $2, $5, a custom amount or nothing. Customers are roasting at the pressure to give a gratuity.
Tips are shared evenly, weekly, between hourly employees. I would estimate average tips to be $1.50/hour. So you're looking at earning about $12 in tips for each 8 hours worked.
Working as a Starbucks barista always has it's own ups and downs due to the customers, and with Target's labor, sometimes it was stressful. One thing that sucks is that the store manager does not allow baristas to take tips or free drinks as it's "not fair" to other target employees.
"The wage workers are receiving isn't sufficient," Jung says. "So now everybody is using this very weird way to increase wages while maintaining the same menu price." In other words, tipping is a way to pay workers more without actually paying them more ... so restaurants can keep prices low.
20% is the REAL standard for tips
Industry insider: common consensus says 15-20% is considered a normal tip, but honestly any amount less than 20% is considered a bad tip. If I (or the other servers I worked with) got less, we wondered what we did wrong.
Is tipping out of control?
Around 30% of respondents think that tipping culture is “out of control,” with more companies encouraging customers to tip at their counters than ever before.
A dollar on drip coffee, it seems, is a roundly good tip. But if you only have leftover change, is that like, offensive? Most baristas said no, it's fine. “It's weird that people so often have their own rules for tipping,” Cho says, “but also weird that we rely on generally unwritten rules for this stuff.
Fast food workers are not “service workers” in any classical sense. They provide little or no personal and unique service to the customers. Tipping is reserved for the people who tailor their services to the needs of the customer.
If you've started working as a food service employee, you might be wondering: Are tips taxable? The simple answer is yes, the IRS treats tips as taxable income. If you earn tips, then you're responsible for paying income, Social Security, and Medicare tax on that tip money.
Some baristas, similar to servers or bartenders, are paid what is known as a tipped wage, which is less than the state or federal minimum wage. In these instances, the difference between an extra $1 an hour and $5 an hour can be the difference in making minimum wage or below.
Tipping at restaurants and coffee shops can be tricky business. Technically, it isn't mandatory, but it's increasingly looked down upon if you skip it altogether. That's exactly the pickle customers are finding themselves in with the new tipping system at [hotlink]Starbucks[/hotlink].
- 'Don't ask for a "normal coffee". ...
- 'One guy asked me for a flat American and then got angry when it didn't exist. ...
- 'Anyone asking for "extra hot" makes what I do as a barista pointless because I'm burning everything in that cup. ...
- 'An Americano is a black coffee.
Just as in Japan, it is not customary to tip in China. Tipping in China is generally uncommon and can even be considered rude or embarrassing in some circumstances so when taking a taxi, enjoying a refreshing drink or tucking into a delicious meal there's no requirement to leave any gratuities.
You Should Always Tip Something, Even If Not 20%
While 20% is the gold standard for a good tip, you can leave less if necessary, as long as you leave something, Badea said. He suggests tipping is just the cost of doing business when going to a restaurant, regardless of service.
There is absolutely no logic to not tipping the owner. My family members and I all work in the service industry, from restaurants to hospitality to salons. Some own their own businesses, and others work for someone. No one understands this belief that the owner of a business should not be tipped.
Can I sit in Starbucks without buying anything?
Starbucks: You don't have to buy coffee to sit in our cafes or use our restrooms. Starbucks is now allowing people to use its restrooms and sit in its cafes and patios even if they do not buy anything.
• Total Hours = Benefit (BEN) hours + Leave of Absence (LOA) hours. • BEN hours includes any paid time off (vacation, sick, etc.)
Hourly pay at Starbucks Corporation ranges from an average of $9.69 to $18.50 an hour. Starbucks Corporation employees with the job title Retail Store Manager make the most with an average hourly rate of $21.74, while employees with the title Cashier make the least with an average hourly rate of $11.54.
You could also end up owing the IRS when you file your return if you don't report your tips properly to your employer throughout the year. When this happens, you should still file your return on time, but you may need to contact a tax resolution attorney to discuss your options for dealing with your IRS tax debt.
After a federal tax rate of 12% has been taken out, Starbucks Baristas could expect to have a take-home pay of $17,939/year, with each paycheck equaling approximately $747 *.
totals are pooled for the entire week and then it's divided by number of hours worked. Let's say people have tipped a total of $100 in a week. That $100 is divided by how many hours the store had, so let's say the total hours worked was 100. That means for every hour someone works, they get a dollar.
Yes. Speaking as someone who works at a Subway, our money mostly comes from tips. Just like a waiter/waitress at a restaurant. This is entirely up to you, however, and if you think they did a good job or not.
Leaving a Tip for Your Cashier
Unfortunately, this can be complicated at McDonald's. According to their website, tips are not accepted as McDonald's restaurants. Instead, show your appreciation with a friendly thank you or tell the manager how happy you are with the service.
Does Starbucks barista notice when you do not tip? Yes. The tip jar is literally right in front of us.
Starbucks Penalizing Unionized Workers by Withholding Credit Card Tipping and Other Benefits. Starbucks violated federal labor law when it excluded 200+ unionized stores from a new policy that facilitated tipping via credit card, according to a new complaint filed by the National Labor Relations Board NLRB.
Is it OK not to tip barista?
Some people have philosophical qualms with tipping, rooted in their feeling that wages should be high enough that tipping isn't needed to ensure a livable wage. Unfortunately, that is not the reality at most coffee shops in the United States, and many baristas rely on the extra income from tips.
As of June 2023, over 8,000 workers at over 360 Starbucks stores in at least 40 states in the United States have voted to unionize, primarily with Workers United. As of March 2023 none have yet enacted a collective bargaining agreement. This unionization effort started at a store in Buffalo, New York.
Since unionizing, though, nothing has changed. Gabel said the company's negotiators have consistently refused or moved dates in response to the union's requests for meetings, beginning with a session last December that was called off after Starbucks said it would not agree to anyone participating virtually.
Judge: Starbucks violated federal labor law by withholding pay hikes from unionized workers. Starbucks violated federal labor law when it increased wages and offered new perks and benefits only to non-union employees, a National Labor Relations Board judge found Thursday.
Again, similarly to other service industry businesses, around 15 to 20 percent should be considered the standard for tipping on coffee, particularly when ordering specialty coffees such as lattes, cold brews, and cappuccinos. On drip coffee, it's considered courteous to still tip around $1 at least.
